Important Considerations When Creating a Will

A former member of the U.S. Army, James “Jay” Davis III served in the 9th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington, for several years. He then earned a bachelor of arts in English from the University of West Georgia and a law degree from Georgia State University. Since 1997, James “Jay” Davis III has operated his law firm, focusing on estate planning and elder law.

One of the key aspects of estate planning, creating a will is essential to ensuring your wishes will be carried out when you are gone. To make the process as stress-free as possible, consider the following:

1. Executor. This is the person who will handle your estate. Choose someone responsible and trustworthy, and first check that they are willing to accept the job.

2. Beneficiaries. Who will receive your property and possessions? Be as specific as possible, and consider what will happen in the case of unlikely events such as your spouse dying at the same time as you.

3. Property. Make a comprehensive list of everything, from homes and land to cars, stocks, and jewelry.

4. Digital legacy. Since many of your photos and writing might exist only online, assign someone to manage or closeout social media accounts and websites.
